I owe a lot to Dave Rastovich. I have never met Dave and he’s never met me. In fact most of what I know about Dave comes from the one surfing DVD I own, Blue Horizon (Amazon, YouTube). And to be precise it was Dave’s Dad who inspired an idea – an idea that in part led to this blog.
A little about Dave… Dave “Ratsa” Rastovich has every surfer’s dream job. He gets paid for free surfing the best waves in the world. In other words, despite the fact that Dave is not on the pro surfing circuit, he is sponsored by Billabong to just surf. How did Dave land such and dream job? He was burnt out surfing the pro circuit, decided he’d had enough and that he needed radical change. He then boldly told Billabong he wanted to free surf and they said they’d sponsor him to do just that! How cool is that. But no, free surfing is not the big idea.
Dave’s Dad lives in New Zealand on his farm. The farm is peaceful and quiet, the kind of place where you can leave your watch in your bag and lose track of time. No that is not the idea either – but it is part of it.
And Dave’s Dad is just so chilled. During an interview with Dave’s Dad he tells us his motto, the Rastovich motto. And these words just stuck in my mind. They some up all of the of what the positive thinking and goal setting, “change you life” books have to say. Six words…
- Think it
- Feel it
- Do it!
Fantastic. And if you have been reading some of my previous posts you’ll understand how, when we talk about achieving goals, those six words really do some up how the mind works. Again that is still not the idea – but it feeds into it.
So what is this big idea of mine? If curiosity has the better of you then post a comment and I’ll drop you an email.

….whats the BIG IDEA! Tell me, Tell me! I like, THINK,FEEL,DO!
OK, I’ll bite. I am always looking for the bit of cake that says “eat me and grow” 🙂
The Tibetan Buddhists have a saying ‘See it, know it, let it go’ It’s not related in any way to Think, Feel, Do… So, who knows why I’m sharing it here Phil!? But, it has been quite a helpful state of being to keep me in the moment (mindful of the joys, challenges, opportunities of each moment). It reminds me of Paul’s advice in Phil 3 to “forget what is behind and strain for what lies ahead” – the Greek word for ‘forget’ is _epilanthomai_ which does not mean forget as in ‘remember no more’. Rather it means to find comfort with one’s memories so that they don’t hold you captive in the past or present… The best way to explain it is if I go into Hilbrow, get out of my car and accidentally leave my cellphone on the roof it will be gone when I get back! So, I become captivated by ‘remembering’ the location of my cellphone – I pat my pocket when I get out of the car. I check more than once to see that it is with me.
However, when I am at home I often have to call my phone to hear it ring so that I can find it – that’s _epilanthomai_ I am so secure in my ‘home space’ that I can leave my phone anywhere safely. See it, know it, watch it go!
